9 Lives manual

Intro

9 LIVES is a strange distortion/noisemaker/sound fucker-upper. Easily capable of self-oscillation and waveform destruction, 9 LIVES is intended for use by guitarists, bassists, synthesists, sound designers, and producers alike.

9 LIVES is handcrafted in Seattle, WA.

Operation

The controls on 9 LIVES are very interactive and interdependent. Changing one control setting will affect the function of the other controls.

Gain

Sets overall gain level. Switch toggles between high/low gain inputs for use with hotter or quieter signals.

Feedback

Controls amount of signal fed back into 9 LIVES when switch is active. FEEDBACK loop can be activated with either toggle switch or momentary footswitch.

Choke

Changes operating point of distortion circuit when switch is active. Lower settings will “choke” out the signal more.

Clip

Blends between clipping amounts and types. Response changes with toggle switch selection. It is normal for 9 LIVES to be louder with CLIP switch off.

Bass & Treble

Passive EQ controls.

Mids

Active midrange control. Can add/remove significant gain to signal, and may self-oscillate at higher settings.

Level

Controls overall output level.

In

¼” mono input jack.

Out

¼” mono output jack.

9V

Power input jack. Industry standard center-negative 2.1mm barrel plug. DC9V ONLY. Do not attempt to run at higher voltages. 9 LIVES only requires a few mA of current to run. We recommend using only high-quality isolated power supplies designed for effects pedals, and to avoid daisy-chaining effects for quietest operation.

Power

LED status indicator. When lit, 9 LIVES is active. When not lit, 9 LIVES is bypassed. 9 LIVES features true-bypass switching.

Note

9 LIVES is capable of generating sound without an input signal, and may be used as a sound source/oscillator.

9 LIVES is inherently noisy.
